Whenever my kids get a cold/cough I give them some Honey mixed in with some Ginger juice. A few(8-10) licks during the day for 3-4 days and the Cough flies away.
For Little kids I would go easy on the Ginger juice.
Also some lemon and Honey in warm water at bedtime also helps kids recover quicker.
